Class Goals:

Our goals in Ancient Civilizations will include exploring the world through various human and land developments, from the earliest known human to the developments of the first communities.  This will be accomplished through reading, writing essays, projects, cooperative group work, quizzes, and tests.  We will also explore and enhance basic skills (i.e. note taking, study methods, public speaking skills etc.) that will aid students in succeeding here at Audubon and throughout their academic career.

 

Course Curriculum:

Our focus of study will be guided by the 6th grade California Social Studies Standards.  We will study the different topics/standards list below, along with other current and historical holiday events:

3.       Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia                                                     (Standard 6.2)

4.      Ancient Hebrews                                                                            (Standard 6.3)

5.      Ancient Greece                                                                                  (Standard 6.4)

7.      Ancient China                                                                                    (Standard 6.6)

8.      Ancient Rome                                                                                    (Standard 6.7)

 

General Standard:

In order to master the material and concepts in the class, students must fully participate in class activities.  This includes, but not limited to students utilizing:

 

Ÿ  Appropriate listening and note-taking skills

Ÿ  Quiet reflection in class and home on the quality of their work

Ÿ  The full class period by having their book and materials out and working

Ÿ  Proper organization and maintenance of their history materials

Ÿ  Attending class with all materials and supplies daily

Read Chapter 29 about the Golden Age of Athens and answer the following questions.
  1. How did religion influence architecture and daily life?
  2. What were the major characteristics of Greek sculpture during this period?
  3. In what ways was ancient Greek theater similar to modern theater? In what ways was it different?
  4. What is philosophy? How did Socrates practice philosophy? What happened to him?
  5. Why did Greeks hold athletic events? In what sports id athletes compete?
  6. Look at the purple box on page 281 (only as a reference).  If you could be the god or goddess of something, what would it be?  What would your name be? How would you use your powers? Why would you choose to be the god/goddess of this particular field or thing?  How would people worship you?
Make sure when you pick a power that it is something different from the things in the purple box on page 281.

Sample Answer:  I would be named Divalicious, goddess of Fashion.  I would use my powers to help those in need, stay in style.  I would want to be goddess of fashion because I feel everyone does not have an automatic fashion sense.  I would feel it was my duty to help those people stay relevant in the Fashion World.  They would worship me by bringing all of their old and ugly attire to my temple called, Dome of Divalicious, and throw them into a fire pit and apologize to my statue for being out of style.
